Celerity Helps Georgetown University Launch New Education MOOC Platform
This week, Georgetown University launched a new Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform with the help of Celerity. A MOOC is a model for delivering learning content online to any person who wants to take a course, with no limit on attendance.
Our Digital Experience team, led by Principal Technology Architect Joshua Ginsberg, provided cloud-hosted server architecture expertise to help bring the project to fruition and set up the cloud infrastructure. We provided recommendations and guidance for cloud-hosted server architecture design and code review for the MOOC. In order to ensure more reliable and automated deploys, our team also set up a better SDLC system. We also performed load testing and performance tuning to ensure the MOOC platform could handle anticipated traffic loads and scale as needed to provide a great user experience.
The platform is hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and uses the Docker container virtualization system for the SDLC and automated builds.
Check out the new online course, Introduction to Bioethics, which is free to the public and taught by seven senior research scholars of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown.
This project reflects a coming-of-age for MOOCs, which were offered at 400+universities to 16-18 million students in 2014. Twenty-two of the top 25 US Universities in US News World Report rankings are now offering courses online for free.
