McLEAN, VA – Drew Engelson, the Chief Technologist in Celerity’s Web and Mobile Solutions practice, is speaking at OSCON, the premier open source gathering held in Portland, Oregon, on July 18, 2012.
Drew’s presentation – entitled “Faster, Faster, Accelerate Your Business with Blazing Prototypes” – explores techniques for fostering innovation within organizations by embracing quick, experimental prototypes, and then compares a number of open source tools used to build these rapid prototypes. He will focus primarily on web development frameworks, including Python, Django, Flask and PHP. Drew will also explain how these tools, along with cloud-based hosting, have transformed media companies such as PBS and National Geographic.
Using real-world examples, Drew will draw on his experience developing high-profile web applications to discuss the common obstacles and fears that prevent businesses from selecting innovative open source platforms.
“Are commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) solutions really the safer choice? I believe you’re likely to be far more innovative with open source solutions. This is really about managing the risks involved with trying something new,” says Drew. “Try something new and fail fast. Learn, and try something else. There are some pretty cool tools out there to accomplish this with little pain.”
For the past 14 years, OSCON has been the premiere technical conference focusing on all open source tools. The five-day conference provides a unique platform for the open source community to make connections, offer inspiration, confront challenges, explore new ideas, learn and collaborate with each other.
